WHY IS SAMSARA SO EFFECTIVE????

Samsara is a Poetic Documentary that has received moderately good critical reviews. Here's several points that should be taken into account when analyzing Samsara that could be useful in my own documentary filmmaking.

  • Filmed over 5 years- This alone is amazing, I enjoy the use of time-lapses. I can aknowledge the amount of time used to create these time-lapses.
  • The opening scene made me question the story-telling aspects of the film.
  • Cinematography was incredible!!!! -This really made the film different.
  • Color correction seems almost too perfect.
  • Juxtaposition really tells the story for example, the children looking on to the men working on the mandala.
  • DETAIL- so so so much detail omniscient?
  • Conformity is a huge theme in this movie. The scene of the teacher going crazy and the robots is extremely uncomfortable. The reason this is done so well is because it's not subtle, it's jarring.

Short Docs On Vimeo You Should See

Here are some short docs to watch:

1.Wes Anderson: A Mini Documentary
View the video here
Cute doc on Wes and his specific directing choices. Exciting to see what makes Anderson so great!
An educational documentary can be interesting, if done correctly. I enjoy the use of other footage directly from anderson's films. This could tie in to expository doc- and would be just as effective if you used found footage.

2. Sloth Squeak!
Click here to listen to a sloth squeak
Very short and simple. Still very effective!
Very little human input, lots of people take these short films super well.

3. The Kinda Sutra
This is so cute!!!!! Loved the animation.
An important aspect that could be taken from this film is using interviews to draw out action.

4. Always A Fire | Chad Jones Documentary
Motivational doc, with brilliant story telling! I loved the included pictures, makes the story more sincere and believable. Beautiful cinematography and great use of older home videos!

Sight of Sound International Film Competition

The song I've chosen for the Sight of Sound Film Competition is: Two Elegiac Melodies: The Wounded Heart. My idea for my film would be a young girl as my subject and her outlook on life and her surroundings. I would keep it fairly simple in filming but use a lot of effects in editing to create more depth.

Hey This is about DEXTER

Dexter a popular television show that first premiered on Showtime and is now easily accessible on Netflix. I'm well into the sixth season and I can easily say I love it! It's a crime drama starring Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan a blood splatter analyst by day and a serial killer by night. This tv show follows his life spending a great amount of time in character development, constantly we learn things about his past and we even get into the life of his sister. If you are a fan of criminal minds or SVU this show is for you!

FILM REVIEW: Connected: An Autoblogography About Love, Death & Technology

Tiffany Shlain is the director of the documentary Connected. The documentary was about the connection between emotion and logic. More closely the film was about the connection of the right and left sides of the brain and how they are used in technology and everyday life.

Tiffany Shlain really engaged the audience by presenting facts that were backed up. Shlain also gave us insight on her own personal life that really created the conflict of the film. Another effective element she used was animation that brought life to the whole situation. I would overall say this film was well made.
